How to Choose the Right Mattress for You

How to Choose the Right Mattress for You

You are looking to buy the perfect mattress for you but it doesn't seem like an easy decision. With hundreds of mattress options available, choosing the right mattress can feel exhausting. In this post, we look at some essential aspects to consider to help you choose a mattress that's right for you.

Set Your Budget

The first step is to set your budget for your new mattress. However, you can't simply set your budget without knowing what your money will get you. Given that a good mattress can help you get a good night's sleep, you must invest in a quality mattress.

You can find entry-level mattresses in the range of £500 to £750, which are very basic, to say the least. For £1,000 to 1,500 you can get mid-range models made of synthetic materials. For £1500 to £2000, you can find hand-made quality mattresses that use natural fibres. If your budget is above £2000, you can expect 100% natural fibres. For £5,000 and above, you can find completely bespoke sleep systems.

Keep a Count of the Springs

It's important to know what type of spring and tension you need for your bodyweight. Most consumers confuse spring tension for the feel of a mattress. Look for a mattress with at least 1,000 pocket springs. You may find mattresses with more than 3,000 springs but these are mere gimmicky products.

Grams Per Square Metre

The next step is to look for decent upholstery. You can do that by finding out the GSM (grams per square metre) of upholstery. Look for mattresses with at least 1000 GSM of upholstery metre in a king-size mattress. Any less and you are likely getting a cheap mattress that won't stand the test of time.

Quality Upholstery

When it comes to mattress upholstery, you essentially have two options:

• Synthetic materials like polyester, foam and white fibres

• Natural fibres like wool, horsetail, bamboo and cotton

If possible, opt for a mattress with Natural fibre as they last longer, are more breathable and offer more resilience. Mattresses featuring natural fibres cost upwards of £1,000.

Comparing Mattresses

When choosing a mattress, you'll be looking at well over 5000 models. So it's important to carry out a like-for-like comparison. Compare the GSM, fabric used, the construction method, spring type and spring tension of each mattress before you take the final call.
