Founded in 1876, Myer's bought Staples in 1986, who have a royal warrant to produce & supply beds to the Royal Family. In 2007 Myer's & Staples beds were purchased by the Hilding Anders group, who already owed Dunlopillo & Slumberland, re-enforcing the Myer's brand, it is still one of the most recognised & reputable in the bedding industry today.

Myer's mattresses may look broadly similar, but the differences are vast. This brief guide will describe some of the options available

Mattress Covers : When you first look at Myer's mattresses you will notice the vast array of different fabric covers. (known in the trade as ticking) Myer's have hundreds of different ticking designs with various different qualities. They range from high quality woven Damasks to more modern breathable knitted stretch fabrics.

Quilting or Tufting : When deciding what mattress to buy you will need to decide whether you prefer a quilted or tufted finish. Quilted mattresses have a generally smoother, flatter surface whilst tufting produces a more undulating result. Myer's quilting can be Micro-quilting that stitches the fabric to the backing material to create innovative designs and effects. Myer's mid to high price point mattresses have high-loft versions that give greater comfort to the mattress surface. Duvet quilting is an effect using a special Tack 'n Jump quilting machine which produces smooth pillow soft areas, not unlike the effects of tufting. Tufted mattresses have a nylon tape which is passed through the mattress at regular intervals and secured each side by felt washers. This pre-tensions the mattress to give a firmer feel. Deep Fill tufting is available on the higher priced beds which gives a deep down support and an upper softer comfort.

Mattress Fillings : Myer's use quality fillings in all of their mattresses. High resilience polyester is used across the range whilst cotton/wool blends are used in more expensive models only. A typical cross section of fillings used in open coil spring mattresses are -  Polyester : A synthetic material with good recovery properties. Cotton : Used near the surface for it's soft feel and ability to breathe and to absorb moisture. Coir Fibre : An insulating layer made from coconut fibre forms a protective barrier to prevent the spring from being felt or penetrate in to the comfort layers. Memory Foam : This special foam slowly responds to body temperature and weight, taking the shape of the user – and slowly recovers its original shape when the heat and pressure is removed. It is used only on Myer's top of the range products. It is used in conjunction with single or twin open coil springs. Myer's use 70mm memory foam which is the deepest on the market. Talalay Latex : Myer's use only the finest, natural Dunlopillo Talalay Latex in all of their mattresses. A premium quality material derived from the sap of the rubber tree. It has a distinctive, resilient feel, is very durable and has anti-microbial properties that offer benefits to many allergy sufferers. Latex foam has unparalleled natural elasticity and recovers its shape immediately when pressure is removed. It also has very good point elasticity resulting in even distribution of pressure for independent support.

Mattress Springs : Myer's use a variety of springs in their mattresses. Bonnell Open Coil Springs : The original & some say the most reliable type of spring. Bonnell springs are inter-connected a both the top & bottom , the complete unit has an outer torsion bar that runs round the upper & lower perimeter, this is connected to all the outer springs, Different thicknesses of wire are used to create soft medium & firm comfort levels, & offers you a level sleeping surface. A variation to this is the Myers Twin Spring Unit : Basically it is two Bonnell units sitting on top of each other, the benefit being you have twice the springs, & generally a softer comfort level. 

About Myer's Beds :

Horatio Myer founded the business in 1876 and the Company occupied premises in Vauxhall Walk, London. It employed 19 people and had an annual turnover of £6,000. Through the reign of Queen Victoria into the 20th Century and through two world wars, Myer’s continued to grow and prosper. From the iron bedsteads of the Victorian era to the first divan beds, Myer’s were at the forefront of bed design and technology.

In 1962 the Huntingdon site was opened, employing 70 people and producing 750 bed sets a week. From 1962 to 1982 Huntingdon and Vauxhall continued to manufacture beds and other furniture including display cabinets and coffee tables. In 1982 the Vauxhall plant was closed and all production was transferred to Huntingdon.

In 2007 Myer's joined the Hilding Anders Group and in 2008, Myer’s was joined by leading bed brands Slumberland and Dunlopillo at the Huntingdon site along with Staples Beds which Myer's acquired in 1986. Today Myer’s still remains true to its heritage by manufacturing beds that are more comfortable than ever giving honest value for money.
