About Sweet Dreams :

Sweet Dreams are one of the UK's bedding industry successes & have been trading for 21 years, based in Burnley, Lancashire; their large factory employs a high percentage of the local community. Better known for their Divan Beds, which is the keystone to Sweet Dreams success, in recent years, they have continued to expand and now supply an in-depth range of metal, wood & leather bedsteads, upholstery and bedroom furniture.

Now more than ever, they understand price is critical. All components, from cover to filling, are carefully assessed to ensure one element doesn’t push a price beyond what a bed’s specification and the current market demand. Their after care is second to none too, with a 12 month guarantee as standard, supported by a further 3 years warranty cover giving you piece of mind when ordering.

In-house manufacture is the key to Sweet Dreams philosophy and to date all Sweet Dreams divans have always been UK-made. Their Beds do extremely well when compared to other beds of similar value – and when compared to many beds that cost significantly more, Sweet Dreams don’t spend money establishing a consumer brand, which helps to keep their prices low, yet the quality matches if not surpasses that of branded beds.

Award-winning
In 2008, Sweet Dreams’ md Riaz Ahmed picked up two awards for entrepreneurship. This recognition of the founder’s qualities indicates what’s so special about Sweet Dreams. Gratifyingly, the awards came in the year Sweet Dreams celebrated its 20th anniversary.

About Millbrook Beds :

CRAFTSMEN LIKE BEGINNINGS : In 1946 when Walter Croll opened his small upholstery and bedding workshop in the Millbrook area of Southampton, majestic ships from such famous lines as Cunard, P & O and Union Castle daily sailed into Southampton Water. The superb interiors of these vessels, which had made Britain's passenger fleet a byword for luxury and elegance, demanded the highest standard of workmanship. The craftsmanship of Walter Croll's workshop soon began to win it a growing number of orders from discerning customers, and when the Union Castle Line awarded Millbrook a contract to refurnish and carpet their entire fleet, the success of the young Company was assured.

GROWING SUCCESS : Year by year the Company has continued to grow and prosper, using the skills employed on the luxury liners to create an ever-growing range of luxurious, high-quality furniture and achieving an enviable reputation - both in finest retail stores and among a widening circle of discerning contract customers. Today, Millbrook craftsmanship in both bedding and upholstery is acknowledged as being of the very highest order and examples of their skill can be seen and admired in both Houses of Parliament, in Embassies around the world and in elegant private homes throughout Britain, Europe and the United States. In addition, millions of people have unknowingly seen Millbrook craftsmanship on their television on programmes produced by TVS such as the "Ruth Rendell" mysteries.  Amongst their many diverse skills Millbrook have restored antiques on display in such diverse places as Sterling Castle and Osborne House, created an artificial “Aladdin’s Cave” for a Middle Eastern Sheikh and more recently completed major work in Downing Street.

HAND AND EYE : Closely examine any piece of Millbrook Bedding and you will immediately see that throughout the years both material and workmanship have remained as high as ever. Our mattresses and divans are meticulously hand-crafted to enhance their individual character. The finest materials are used to ensure the greatest comfort and traditional hand-finishing helps extend the life of the bed. Overall, a "rightness" of design, avoiding both the fussy, or whimsically fashionable, and yet offering the highest standards in visual appeal makes each Millbrook bed a classic to treasure and enjoy for many years.

A MATTER OF PRIDE : Millbrook are very much a family firm.  Many of the skilled mattress and divan makers and seamstresses have followed their parents or grandparents into the Company. To everyone, the excellence and high reputation of Millbrook is a matter of quiet personal pride and it is perhaps this more than any other factor that results in the supreme quality and finish of each piece of Millbrook furniture. Of course, Millbrook Beds Ltd was one of the first pocket sprung bed companies to achieve B.S. 5750.

HISTORY OF BEDS : If you were born in the medieval era and were of reasonable wealth (a farmer for instance) the most expensive piece of furniture you owned would have been your bed. Beds were usually constructed from wood and had a mattress stuffed with straw, animal hair, or feathers. Curtains would have been hung around the bed to offer privacy and protection from the cold - it was usual for other family members and servants to sleep in the same room. Servants would sleep on a straw mattress (palliasse) that would be stored under the master's bed during the day. This type of bed is still known as a 'truckle'. Until well into the 20th Century, many poor people slept on straw mattresses. Queen Victoria was reputed to sleep on four mattresses (straw, 2 animal hair, down topping) - perhaps the story of ‘The Princess and the Pea’ is not far from the truth.
SPRINGS : The first step towards the modern bed was the development of sprung interiors and bases. Before this, feather or hair mattresses were set on fully sprung box bases or wire mesh bedsteads. Today, with the exception of waterbeds, some high quality latex mattresses and some cheap foam mattresses, it is unusual to find a mattress without interior springing. The main types of modern spring units are as follows:  open coil, knitted and pocket spring. Open Coil (often called a 'Bonnell' unit) - individual springs are joined together using wire. There are between 288 and 325 springs in a 5'0 mattress. Knitted - a spring system created from continuous lengths of interwoven wire.
POCKET SPRINGS : these are the finest of spring systems.  Each spring is housed within individual fabric pockets.  They move independently of each other, eliminating 'roll-together' and offering correct spinal support. Spring counts vary between 800 and 3000 and the best spring units are assembled in two tiers, giving greater support.
Upholstery : Correct spinal support is vital, however, without comfort sleep offers little benefit. Mattresses are upholstered to offer comfort to the sleeper - soft fillings mould to body shape and allow muscles to relax, helping to prevent restricted blood flow caused by pressure points. Most high quality mattresses are upholstered with loose fibres (hair, lambswool, cotton, silk, etc). These mattresses have tufts (cords that pass though the mattress) to keep all the fibre in place, preventing migration to the edges. An indication of the quality of the mattress is if it is  'hand side stitched'. This is where the border is sewn to the internal spring unit by hand, helping to strengthen it. Millbrook hand side stitches in time honoured tradition, but has also developed a method of machine side stitching that is more economical for lower priced mattresses. Those people who suffer from allergies or asthma should look out for hypo-allergenic or anti-bacterial/microbial fillings, such as latex.
DIVAN BED BASES : There are several types of bases, all with different benefits and features. Solid top/storage base has been popular with those who believe that a hard bed is beneficial to support a bad back. This is in fact a myth and so-called ‘orthopaedic’ beds should only be used for short-term complaints, such as a slipped disc. A bed that supports but also offers soft comfort is essential to well-being and a good sleep. Sprung bases offer greater levels of comfort and prolong the life of the mattress.
BED LIFE : The average life of a bed is 10 years.  However it is recommended that consumers change their bed every 8-10 years.  Even with the most expensive bed, the interior will start to deteriorate becoming an unhygienic sleeping environment after years of perspiring and moving throughout the night.

MILLBROOK BEDS TODAY : All Millbrook beds offer the ultimate in sleep luxury.  Our design philosophy is uncompromising and brings together everything that makes our beds special.  Borne out of craftsmanship and use of the finest quality materials, giving you the ultimate in sleep luxury. It is very reassuring in these days of mass production, to find a company totally committed to the traditional ideals of quality and craftsmanship. Millbrook Beds is the perfect reflection of these traditions highlighted in the elegance and sumptuous qualities of all of our beds. It has been recognised for many years that sleep in its finest form is a vital part of a healthy life, promoting a well-being both physical and mental.

POCKET SPRINGS : The pocket spring is at the heart of all our top quality sprung beds, each spring is placed into its own individual pocket and sewn all around to isolate it from its neighbours, ensuring no ‘roll-together’. DPSS® (Double pocket spring system) Double stacking and individually hand nested pocket  springs provide superior levels of support. The top tier if the springs absorbs the majority of the weight whilst conforming to the body shape. The bottom rows resist more gently adding to the overall support and also to the longevity of the mattress, all working in harmony to ensure that your body is supported. Our unique Zonal edge springing provides extra strength to the sides of the mattress, by applying 2 rows of firmer springs on either side, ensuring no ‘roll-off’ or sleep disturbance.

HAND-SIDE STITCHING : Every mattress in the range features traditional hand-side stitching which secures the outer springs to the border at top and bottom preventing ‘roll-out’, and is the most highly skilled and labour intensive of all our operations.  Side-stitching is carried out by senior upholsterers using traditional long needles and twine to make borders and edges stronger.  The effects on the mattress are quite dramatic preventing the springs from distorting and extending the sleeping area right up to the edge of the bed.

DIVAN BASE : The fully sprung edge zonal divan base has a unique spring system incorporating two support levels of spring torsion with a higher gauge spring supporting the edge to prevent ‘roll-off’ and also creates a firm, supportive foundation for the mattress. All divans are made from solid timber to carry the weight of the sumptuous mattress and load-bearing joints are secured and glued by hand for lasting strength.  All divans are mounted on smooth running solid metal casters. The drawers come complete with unique, smooth ball-bearing steel action runners.

BED CARE : 10 simple steps to looking after your bed : Millbrook’s beds are made from the finest natural materials and handmade to highest standards of workmanship. Your bed should therefore be treated as an investment as it will last for many years. The beds lifespan will depend on how well it is cared for; therefore your new bed needs just a little care and consideration. The following points will ensure you achieve maximum comfort and sleep satisfaction

1. SETTLING IN TO YOUR NEW BED : Your bed may seem a bit strange at first - it always takes a few days to settle into a new bed. Your previous bed was probably quite old and past its best. Your body will adjust to the superior comfort level of your new bed and you’ll start to notice the benefits of a deeper sleep.

2. MINIMISE SETTLEMENT OF FILLINGS : Our fillings are especially sumptuous - body indentations in the mattress caused by body weight compressing the fillings are a normal characteristic. This settlement of fillings can be minimised by the regular turning of the mattress. Your bed is handcrafted and therefore is one of a kind. Because of these qualities we expect there to be some variation in standard size.  Occasionally due to the high quality fillings we use including silk, lambswool and cashmere, there may be some migration of the fillings to the surface of the mattress due to their natural fineness, if this should occur, lightly brush them away, do not vacuum your mattress.

3. TURN MATTRESS REGULARLY : It is important that you turn your mattress regularly to aid even filling settlement and to prolong the mattress life. We recommend that you turn your mattress from side to side and end to end weekly for the first four months. Thereafter it should be turned every month.  If you have a non-turn mattress it can be easily rotated, or if you have a Winter/Summer mattress turn your mattress from side to side and end to end seasonally.

4. GET ASSISTANCE WHILE TURNING YOUR MATTRESS : We recommend that you seek assistance to turn the mattress. Apart from the risk of injury to yourself, you also risk damaging the springs should you bang, bend or roll the mattress.  This would invalidate your guarantee.

5. DO NOT BEND OR ROLL YOUR MATTRESS : Please avoid any unnecessary rolling or bending of your mattress as it is likely to damage the spring units and invalidate your guarantee.

6. ALLOW THE MATTRESS TO BREATHE : Our bodies generate over a pint of moisture during the night. It is important to let your bed breathe to allow that moisture to dissipate.  Simply by turning down your bed clothes in the morning will allow the bed to air.

7. PROTECT YOUR MATTRESS : We advise that you protect your mattress with a suitable natural fibre mattress cover. This will help to protect the surface of your mattress from contact with moisture and the risk of staining.  A mattress cover will keep your mattress looking pristine for years to come.

8. FIT CASTORS WITHOUT EXCESSIVE FORCE : Please read instructions for how to fit castors. Castors should be tapped lightly home with a hammer. Avoid excessive force as this can cause damage.

9. AVOID OVERLOADING OF DRAWERS : Your bed may have drawers - these drawers have been designed to accommodate lightweight items only. Please do not overload, as excessive weight can cause damage to the runners and may jam the drawer.

10. REFRAIN FROM USING DETERGENTS AND VACUUM CLEANERS : We do not advise the use of detergents or chemical cleaners on your mattress as this may bleach or disintegrate the fabric.  Do not vacuum your mattress as this will damage the luxurious fillings.
