It is important when choosing a new mattress that you pick one to suit your individual sleeping needs. For example, people who suffer from circulatory problems, aching joints and back pains should consider one of the innovative memory foam mattresses or breathable latex mattresses we have available.
Specially designed for NASA during the seventies and only available to consumers from the beginning of the nineties, these modern alternatives are made to alleviate discomfort caused by pressure points whilst sleeping. If memory mattresses don’t sound like something you would like to try, then you should still consider which of our wide range of traditional double mattresses will best suit your requirements – do you like a firm bed, a soft bed, or something in between ?
beds4udirect offer a great range of high quality mattresses at low prices all with a minimum one year guarantee, and a further four to twelve years manufactures warranty. You can afford to treat yourself to one of the great mattresses from our store, with our outstanding price promise – we will beat any competitors’ price by at least five percent – we’re confident that we can find something to suit your taste and budget. If you’d like to learn more about any of the mattresses or beds available throughout our store, please feel free to call us on 0191 4147293, Monday to Saturday 9.30am to 5.30pm and Sunday 10.30am to 4.30pm, or alternatively, you could email us at beds4udirect@btconnect.com. Our friendly staff will be happy to help.
Deliver is Free Of Charge to most locations within UK mainland, we also deliver to Ireland, please read our purchasing terms and conditions, section 3, which can be found on our home page left side menu. You can even have your bed assembled, & the packaging removed, if arranged when ordering at a modest additional charge.
Pocket Sprung Mattresses : Pre-stressed springs are inserted into individual pockets, hence the name Pocket Sprung. Where as all other spring systems are inter-connected, the key benefit of the Pocket is that each spring works independently, giving total body support regardless of your sleeping position. The greater the spring count - the smaller the circumference of each spring, this results in greater overall support. Spring counts above 1400 tend to be in a two layer stacked unit. There is a wide price range on pocket mattresses, they can be found from as little as £199.95 up to £1999.95 and above.
There is a tremendous variation in the fillings used in pocket mattresses, from polyester & foam layers at the budget end, up to latex & memory foam, and traditional fillings such as felts, cotton, lambs wool, cashmere & silk. The thickness & quality of each layer will affect the overall price. The quality of the cover also affects the price, as does the overall finish, i.e. hand stitched or machine stitched side boarders & the number of handles and air vent. Note : Where spring counts are mentioned, it always refers to the number of springs in a 5'0 (150cm) King Size Mattress.
Natural Latex No Turn Mattress : This relatively new generation of mattress is available with various spring systems. All of which have no necessity to turn on a regular basis. The traditional fillings are replaced or combined with a deep layer of Latex. The breathable Latex gives you an optimum level of support, and moulds perfectly to your body shape. In addition it allows a greater level of air circulation and moisture control. It is a hypoallergenic filling, which inhibits dust mites in the bed.
Memory No Turn Mattress : Memory foam, was originally created for the NASA Space Program and used within the capsules seating. It’s soft and body conforming properties helped reduce the stress and buffeting on the astronauts bodies. The visco elastic properties react with your body heat and slowly sink and mould to your body shape, giving you total support to every curve in your body. Formula one racing cars also use memory foam in their seats. Memory foam can create added heat to your sleeping surface, so it is normally combined with a knitted breathable cover. The 3rd generation memory foam is breathable and restricts heat build up. Memory foam is very resilient, and bounces back to its original shape when the heat detracts. Different depths from 20mm to 70mm are used within mattresses, a good guide being the more you pay the deeper the depth of memory foam used. Other contributing factors like additional fillings and spring type also effect the price level.
Block Foam Mattress : A block foam mattress contains no springs; it is made up from different grades of foam, including Bulltex molded foam, which is normally associated with good quality upholstery seating. Memory foam, Visco Elastic and Latex. Many of these mattresses are supplied in a rolled up form, which expand into shape over a period of hours on unpacking. One word of caution : some of the UK suppliers, importers, and larger retailers, have not really done there homework on these, and buy purely on price from the far east. The foam properties of these mattresses are poor and offer little body support, they are prone to collapse and have poor rebound properties.
This type of product can be identified when sat on, normally your bottom will sink down to the frame, they should also be identifiable by the lower price, but this is not always the case. Our range of roll up mattresses are from major UK manufactures including Silentnight, Healthbeds & Breasley, we also import a superior range from PerDomire in Italy. They all offer a good quality product at a sensible price. Block foam mattresses are hypoallergenic and the better quality units contain a layer of Bulltex foam combined with assorted depths of memory foam, visco or latex. They feel different to a traditional sprung mattress, when you turn over or move in bed the moulded body shape you left slowly expands upward, while your new position slowly compresses downward. They offer an excellent level of comfort and support and have a long life. Most Block foam mattresses come with a knitted breathable cover, that zip off for dry cleaning or machine washable. Superior models have Coolmax, Stress Free or Aloe Vera, properties within the cover.
No Turn Mattresses : The term 'No Turn' means exactly what it states, the mattress does not need turning. Rather than have fillings and micro quilt finishing on both sides of the mattress, the 'No Turn' has a greater level of fillings concentrated on one side. The secondary side only has a thin layer of upholstery fillings, and no micro quilt finish. The 'No Turn' option is available on most spring types.
Zoned Multi Coil Mattress : These include Sleepzone® - Ultrazone® - Flexiform® - Posturezone® - & the brand leader Miracoil® by Silentnight. This type of mattress is made up of one continous coil of wire, which creates smaller diamator springs, resulting in twice the spring count of a traditional open coil spring unit. This high-tec manufacturing process also allows the spring unit to be zoned, a greater consintration of springs in the most benefical reigions of the mattress ie : Silentnight Miracoil 3 has a higher consentration of springs in the middle third where your main body weight is, the benefit of this is greater support across the body length. The Miracoil 7 has 7 zones each with different tensions allowing for better pressure releif.
Standard Bonnell Open Coil Mattress : The original & standard mattress spring. If you were asked to draw a spring, this is what you would draw. An Open Coil Mattress typically contains fewer, but larger circumference springs than those previously mentioned, but still provide an excellent level of comfort & support. An average 4'6 (1.35cm) open coil units consists of approx. 288 springs, these are all inter connected at the top and bottom. The complete unit is then fitted with a heavy steel rod edge support, which maintains it shape. Varying quantities & qualities of fillings are used. A typical price range for a 4'6 (135m) standard double would be from £99.95 to £499.95.

Dorlux use four different spring systems :
Easyrest® Pocketed Spring System - This unique barrel shaped spring is wider round the middle allowing them to telescope inside themselves when being compressed. This allows full flexing of the spring & ensures that the mattress cradles your body providing correct spinal support. Pocket springs are normally stitched into individual polyester cases, the Easyrest spring uses non-allergenic, non-moisture absorbent pocket material, meaning the pockets last longer & naturally provide a healthier sleeping environment.
Postureline 1100 Spring system - Hand made in the Calder Valley the Postureline spring system is unique to Dorlux Beds & has an interlinked system made from one continuous piece of wire, which enables all the springs to work in unison and is especially designed to promote restful sleep. The springs run from head to toe which results in exceptional individual support, eliminates roll together & adapts to the natural shape of your body. With three times the springs than an ordinary mattress, the Postureline spring system is especially suitable or bedsteads & bed frames.
Flexiform Spring Unit - Designed by Swiss engineers & manufactured exclusively by Dorlux. The springs are heat treated twice, firstly when individual springs are formed & secondly when assembled, the entire spring unit is then tempered in a giant oven, ensuring they maintain their shape & form for years to come. A Flexiform mattress contains hundreds of small springs, twice as many as conventional sprung mattresses, thus offering outstanding levels of comfort.
Open Coil Spring system - This is the most widely used spring system within the bedding industry. It incorporates rows of hourglass shaped springs, which are joined to the neighbouring springs by a continuousd small diameter spiral called 'helical wire'. These open coil units are heat treated twice as pr the Flexiform Spring Unit.
Myer's Beds : have the complete solution when it comes to beds. Whether you want a traditional open coil sprung mattress, a twin spring mattress, or the latest memory foam or latex mattress, you will find your perfect bed here. Myer's beds have always been made with one thing in mind - providing people with best nights sleep possible. Myer's are renowned for their value for money products - quality is never an issue either, as all Myer's beds carry a 12 year warranty. Founded in 1876, Myer's bought Staples in 1986, who have a royal warrant to produce & supply beds to the Royal Family. In 2007 Myer's & Staples beds were purchased by the Hilding Anders group, who already owed Dunlopillo & Slumberland, re-enforcing the Myer's brand, it is still one of the most recognised & reputable in the bedding industry today.
Pocket Sprung Technology : Rest Assured believe the mattress should adjust to you – not the other way round. So for your complete ease and comfort, the mattresses contain hundreds of springs placed closely together under layers of sumptuous fillings. Each precision-made coil is wrapped in its own individual soft cloth sleeve, holding the spring at exactly the right tension and allowing it to move independently. This means each spring is poised to adjust and respond to your every movement for a deeply supportive sleep, all night long. Within the range you will find an assortment of spring counts indicated by the number after the model name, e.g. the Thia Sky 2000 has 2,000 individual pocket springs in a king size mattress. ( Within the bed trade all spring counts on pocket sprung models relate to the number of springs in a 5’0 king size mattress, other sizes are pro rata to the 5’0 ) The more springs there are, the less body weight has to be supported by each spring and the mattress will be more supportive and responsive. Pocket sprung mattresses can be purchased on their own or as a complete divan bed.
Traditional & Modern Day Fillings : Rest Assured still use all of the traditional methods when making a mattress, hand stitched side boarders are common place, as are side air vents, and turning handles. Traditional fillings include pure new wool, smooth silk, mohair & assorted soft fibre pads. Mattresses with these fillings are normally finished with hand tufting to maintain the mattress shape and stop unnecessary movement of the fillings. It should be noted that this type of mattress will show dips in the top surface where you have been sleeping, this is quiet normal and due to the high depth of fillings being naturally flattened into shape.
You will find a traditional filled mattress gets comfier through use, over a period of years the comfort level will outlast other types of mattresses with lesser quality fillings. In addition to the traditional fillings Rest Assured widely use memory foam and Innergetic® latex as a top layer. The memory foam slowly compresses with your body heat and weight, moulding to your exact body shape. Combined with the pocket spring unit, the comfort level is rarely surpassed. Latex reacts quicker, and instantly supports your body shape, reducing pressure points across your body, it is also breathable and offers you a cooler sleeping surface. When used in conjunction with a pocket sprung system the comfort level is superior. Both memory foam mattresses and latex mattresses are easy care and only require turning head to toe. The rebound properties of memory foam and latex also help to maintain the mattresses shape & appearance.

If you share a double bed, each of you has a space less than 70cm wide in which to sleep – that's less than in a single bed. Upgrading to a king or superking size will give you extra space to stretch out in comfort, undisturbed by your partner.
Handy storage : If you choose a divan set (mattress and matching divan base), you can choose to have handy storage drawers in the base – a great place to store your bed linen!
When choosing a bed, most people start by trying to describe how they want it to feel, so we've split our beds into three categories :

The Miracoil® 7 Pocket Mattress : This mattress offers you all the benefits of the Miracoil® 7 mattress but further enhances with a 1350 mirapocket unit. These individual springs are all encased in fabric pockets, working independently to contour your body shape. A choice of 3 models are available in this group including a memory breathe model & an innergetic® breathable latex model. Mattress heights vary from 34.5cm to 37cm.
Silentnight Sprung Edge Divan Bases : The Silentnight sprung edge bed base, has been specially developed to work in tandem with the Miracoil® Spring Unit. Sweet Dreams : Sweet Dreams are one of the UK's bedding industry successes & have been trading for 21 years, based in Burnley, Lancashire; their large factory employs a high percentage of the local community. Better known for their Divan Beds, which is the keystone to Sweet Dreams success, in recent years, they have continued to expand and now supply an in-depth range of metal, wood & leather bedsteads, upholstery and bedroom furniture. Now more than ever, they understand price is critical. All components, from cover to filling, are carefully assessed to ensure one element doesn’t push a price beyond what a bed’s specification and the current market demand.
Their after care is second to none too, with a 12 month guarantee as standard, supported by a further 3 years warranty cover giving you piece of mind when ordering. In-house manufacture is the key to Sweet Dreams philosophy and to date all Sweet Dreams divans have always been UK-made. Their Beds do extremely well when compared to other beds of similar value – and when compared to many beds that cost significantly more, Sweet Dreams don’t spend money establishing a consumer brand, which helps to keep their prices low, yet the quality matches if not surpasses that of branded beds.
Award-winning - In 2008, Sweet Dreams’ md Riaz Ahmed picked up two awards for entrepreneurship. This recognition of the founder’s qualities indicates what’s so special about Sweet Dreams. Gratifyingly, the awards came in the year Sweet Dreams celebrated its 20th anniversary.

Millbrook Beds : Craftsmen Like Beginnings : In 1946 when Walter Croll opened his small upholstery and bedding workshop in the Millbrook area of Southampton, majestic ships from such famous lines as Cunard, P & O and Union Castle daily sailed into Southampton Water. The superb interiors of these vessels, which had made Britain's passenger fleet a byword for luxury and elegance, demanded the highest standard of workmanship. The craftsmanship of Walter Croll's workshop soon began to win it a growing number of orders from discerning customers, and when the Union Castle Line awarded Millbrook a contract to refurnish and carpet their entire fleet, the success of the young Company was assured.
Growing Success : Year by year the Company has continued to grow and prosper, using the skills employed on the luxury liners to create an ever-growing range of luxurious, high-quality furniture and achieving an enviable reputation - both in finest retail stores and among a widening circle of discerning contract customers. Today, Millbrook craftsmanship in both bedding and upholstery is acknowledged as being of the very highest order and examples of their skill can be seen and admired in both Houses of Parliament, in Embassies around the world and in elegant private homes throughout Britain, Europe and the United States. In addition, millions of people have unknowingly seen Millbrook craftsmanship on their television on programmes produced by TVS such as the "Ruth Rendell" mysteries. Amongst their many diverse skills Millbrook have restored antiques on display in such diverse places as Sterling Castle and Osborne House, created an artificial “Aladdin’s Cave” for a Middle Eastern Sheikh and more recently completed major work in Downing Street.
Hand & Eye : Closely examine any piece of Millbrook Bedding and you will immediately see that throughout the years both material and workmanship have remained as high as ever. Our mattresses and divans are meticulously hand-crafted to enhance their individual character. The finest materials are used to ensure the greatest comfort and traditional hand-finishing helps extend the life of the bed. Overall, a "rightness" of design, avoiding both the fussy, or whimsically fashionable, and yet offering the highest standards in visual appeal makes each Millbrook bed a classic to treasure and enjoy for many years.
A Matter Of Pride : Millbrook are very much a family firm. Many of the skilled mattress and divan makers and seamstresses have followed their parents or grandparents into the Company. To everyone, the excellence and high reputation of Millbrook is a matter of quiet personal pride and it is perhaps this more than any other factor that results in the supreme quality and finish of each piece of Millbrook furniture. Of course, Millbrook Beds Ltd was one of the first pocket sprung bed companies to achieve B.S. 5750.
History Of Beds : If you were born in the medieval era and were of reasonable wealth (a farmer for instance) the most expensive piece of furniture you owned would have been your bed. Beds were usually constructed from wood and had a mattress stuffed with straw, animal hair, or feathers. Curtains would have been hung around the bed to offer privacy and protection from the cold - it was usual for other family members and servants to sleep in the same room. Servants would sleep on a straw mattress (palliasse) that would be stored under the master's bed during the day. This type of bed is still known as a 'truckle'. Until well into the 20th Century, many poor people slept on straw mattresses. Queen Victoria was reputed to sleep on four mattresses (straw, 2 animal hair, down topping) - perhaps the story of ‘The Princess and the Pea’ is not far from the truth.
Springs : The first step towards the modern bed was the development of sprung interiors and bases. Before this, feather or hair mattresses were set on fully sprung box bases or wire mesh bedsteads. Today, with the exception of waterbeds, some high quality latex mattresses and some cheap foam mattresses, it is unusual to find a mattress without interior springing. The main types of modern spring units are as follows: open coil, knitted and pocket spring. Open Coil (often called a 'Bonnell' unit) - individual springs are joined together using wire. There are between 288 and 325 springs in a 5'0 mattress.
