A Brief Introduction On Mattress Types & Their Benefits :
Pocket Sprung Mattresses : Pre-stressed springs are inserted into individual pockets, hence the name Pocket Sprung. Where as all other spring systems are inter-connected, the key benefit of the Pocket is that each spring works independently, giving total body support regardless of your sleeping position. The greater the spring count - the smaller the circumference of each spring, this results in greater overall support. Spring counts above 1400 tend to be in a two layer stacked unit. There is a wide price range on pocket mattresses, they can be found from as little as £199.95 up to £1999.95 and above.
There is a tremendous variation in the fillings used in pocket mattresses, from polyester & foam layers at the budget end, up to latex & memory foam, and traditional fillings such as felts, cotton, lambs wool, cashmere & silk. The thickness & quality of each layer will affect the overall price. The quality of the cover also affects the price, as does the overall finish, i.e. hand stitched or machine stitched side boarders & the number of handles and air vent. Note : Where spring counts are mentioned, it always refers to the number of springs in a 5'0 (150cm) King Size Mattress.
Natural Latex No Turn Mattress : This relatively new generation of mattress is available with various spring systems. All of which have no necessity to turn on a regular basis. The traditional fillings are replaced or combined with a deep layer of Latex. The breathable Latex gives you an optimum level of support, and moulds perfectly to your body shape. In addition it allows a greater level of air circulation and moisture control. It is a hypoallergenic filling, which inhibits dust mites in the bed.
Memory No Turn Mattress : Memory foam, was originally created for the NASA Space Program and used within the capsules seating. It’s soft and body conforming properties helped reduce the stress and buffeting on the astronauts bodies. The visco elastic properties react with your body heat and slowly sink and mould to your body shape, giving you total support to every curve in your body. Formula one racing cars also use memory foam in their seats. Memory foam can create added heat to your sleeping surface, so it is normally combined with a knitted breathable cover. The 3rd generation memory foam is breathable and restricts heat build up.
Memory foam is very resilient, and bounces back to its original shape when the heat detracts. Different depths from 20mm to 70mm are used within mattresses, a good guide being the more you pay the deeper the depth of memory foam used. Other contributing factors like additional fillings and spring type also effect the price level.
Block Foam Mattress : A block foam mattress contains no springs; it is made up from different grades of foam, including Bulltex molded foam, which is normally associated with good quality upholstery seating. Memory foam, Visco Elastic and Latex. Many of these mattresses are supplied in a rolled up form, which expand into shape over a period of hours on unpacking. One word of caution : some of the UK suppliers, importers, and larger retailers, have not really done there homework on these, and buy purely on price from the far east. The foam properties of these mattresses are poor and offer little body support, they are prone to collapse and have poor rebound properties. This type of product can be identified when sat on, normally your bottom will sink down to the frame, they should also be identifiable by the lower price, but this is not always the case.
Our range of roll up mattresses are from major UK manufactures including Silentnight, Healthbeds & Breasley, we also import a superior range from PerDomire in Italy. They all offer a good quality product at a sensible price. Block foam mattresses are hypoallergenic and the better quality units contain a layer of Bulltex foam combined with assorted depths of memory foam, visco or latex. They feel different to a traditional sprung mattress, when you turn over or move in bed the moulded body shape you left slowly expands upward, while your new position slowly compresses downward. They offer an excellent level of comfort and support and have a long life. Most Block foam mattresses come with a knitted breathable cover, that zip off for dry cleaning or machine washable. Superior models have Coolmax, Stress Free or Aloe Vera, properties within the cover.
No Turn Mattresses : The term 'No Turn' means exactly what it states, the mattress does not need turning. Rather than have fillings and micro quilt finishing on both sides of the mattress, the 'No Turn' has a greater level of fillings concentrated on one side. The secondary side only has a thin layer of upholstery fillings, and no micro quilt finish. The 'No Turn' option is available on most spring types.
Zoned Multi Coil Mattress : These include Sleepzone® - Ultrazone® - Flexiform® - Posturezone® - & the brand leader Miracoil® by Silentnight. This type of mattress is made up of one continous coil of wire, which creates smaller diamator springs, resulting in twice the spring count of a traditional open coil spring unit. This high-tec manufacturing process also allows the spring unit to be zoned, a greater consintration of springs in the most benefical reigions of the mattress ie : Silentnight Miracoil 3 has a higher consentration of springs in the middle third where your main body weight is, the benefit of this is greater support across the body length. The Miracoil 7 has 7 zones each with different tensions allowing for better pressure releif.
Standard Bonnell Open Coil Mattress : The original & standard mattress spring. If you were asked to draw a spring, this is what you would draw. An Open Coil Mattress typically contains fewer, but larger circumference springs than those previously mentioned, but still provide an excellent level of comfort & support. An average 4'6 (1.35cm) open coil units consists of approx. 288 springs, these are all inter connected at the top and bottom. The complete unit is then fitted with a heavy steel rod edge support, which maintains it shape. Varying quantities & qualities of fillings are used. A typical price range for a 4'6 (135m) standard double would be from £99.95 to £499.95.
