Axminster Carpets™Among the carpets featured are the only authentic Axminsters made by Axminster Carpets in the town of Axminster, England. By using the original Axminster weaving process, they are made mostly from natural fibres, made in Britain and they are ravishingly, stunningly beautiful.
Because some aspects of the Axminster manufacturing process cannot be patented, there are other carpet manufacturers who can make ‘Axminsters’, but they are not the same as the trademarked British product. Our Axminsters are natural, British and beautiful, often 100% wool, jute backed, and in many cases made on eight pitch looms, the ultimate in quality, unique to the Axminster Carpets company.
One of very few carpet manufacturers who can claim ‘from fleece to floor’, Axminster Carpets make woven Axminsters and Wiltons as well as highest quality tufted carpets, all famous for comfort and long lasting durability, recommended by generations. If that makes you associate Axminsters with the past, however, think again. Real Axminster TM carpets range from stunning plains in everything from neutrals to high fashion colours, to fabulous textures and contemporary patterns, to the splendour of those newly modish antique style carpets in the grand French and Persian traditions.
Axminster Carpets is also the only manufacturer to spin its own yarn and manufacture Axminster, Wilton and Tufted products for commercial specifiers as well as for the domestic market. In the commercial and interior design sector, the company offers stock ranges, innovative bespoke design skills, bespoke services, technical support and project management capabilities.
Axminster Carpets is one of the largest manufacturers of Wilton carpet for transportation applications. From blending through to dyeing, the company ensures a consistent quality and ultimate compliance with ISO 9002 is maintained.
Axminster Carpets is able to produce a wide range of specifications to meet the budgets and needs of each individual client, and those selecting an 8 pitch specification have the opportunity to develop their own designs with truly remarkable clarity and quality. Axminster is the only manufacturer with a UKAS accredited laboratory in-house.
Cavalier Carpets have been producing Carpet for the home since 1972 and today we are one of only a handful of companies that manufacture carpets in Wilton, Axminster and Tufted constructions.
In 1986 the company expanded from the domestic market to include the contract market. This move proved immensely successful as Cavalier Carpets established both at home and abroad. Today we span both the retail and contract markets and our business has a firm domestic and export base.
Indeed our products have been used around the world in palaces, embassies, hotels, restaurants, ocean liners, banks, department stores and casinos, as well as millions of homeowners throughout Great Britain.
We are rightly proud of our history of innovation that has seen the company grow from small beginnings into one of the premier British manufacturers in the industry. Cavalier Carpets are pleased to have achieved its growth whilst retaining its private ownership, which we believe allows for greater flexibility in our decision-making.
Cavalier Carpets primary aim over the years has been to provide customers with well-designed products of high quality and at the best value. Whilst we manufacture all types of product for all kinds of tastes including synthetics, we have nevertheless built our reputation on the wool based products that remain the first choice of the discerning British public.
And so we go from strength to strength. It’s a success story that is firmly based on massive investment in plant, machinery and the very latest in information technology. This is evidenced most recently in Cavalier Carpets move into the insurance market where we aim to provide excellent levels of service at good value to the benefit of both homeowner and insurance companies.
Such commitment to the future is why we believe it should prove a continuing success story.
One of the success stories of the British carpet industry, Lancashire based Cormar Carpets was established in the North of England in 1956 and today ranks as one of the leading carpet manufacturers in the UK.
Throughout the last 50 years it has placed great emphasis on quality, service and reliability. In fact, such is the esteem in which the company is held, that it has been voted 'Floor Covering Supplier of the Year' for the last five years by readers of the flooring trade magazine, as well as winning many independent retailer awards. In 2006 the company was named as one of 10 companies to watch in the Sunday Times Top 100 independent companies in the UK.
While most carpet sold in Britain today is imported from the continent, Cormar continues to manufacture carpet at its two mills in Lancashire, working with suppliers and partners to source quality raw materials and with leading trade organisations such as Carpet Recycling UK (www.carpetrecyclinguk.com) to ensure sustainable manufacture.

Remaining a privately owned family business, Cormar’s primary aim is to manufacture quality carpets and provide a first class service to all its customers. Success is based on continuous improvement in machinery and systems as well as training and investment in its loyal staff.
There is no better combination of quality, value and choice than a Cormar carpet. A comprehensive range of plain and heather wool twist piles, textured loop piles and easy clean polypropylene carpets are all manufactured on site at the two mills. Only the best quality yarns in 100% pure new wool, 80% woolblends and easy clean polypropylene are used and most ranges are available in both four and five metre widths for carpeting wider rooms without joins.
All ranges are shown on the website (see Carpet Ranges) and a free sample service enables samples to be sent direct to your home for you to match to your interior design scheme.

Associated Weavers takes innovation to the next level In the UK carpet industry, Associated Weavers (AW) is more than just a business – it’s a brand, promising possibilities, choice and comfort. With product development at the forefront of its business, the company has embarked on offering the consumer not only an affordable carpet, but one that is unique in all aspects of colour, texture and yarn.
Founded in 1907 by Joseph Henry Abrahams, Associated Weavers began trading as a furniture and coverings manufacturer. As one of the most successful businesses within the trade, Northern Chair Works – as it was then called – found itself becoming an enviable brand, however its products soon deviated. When Britain went to war in 1914 the company were called upon to produce shell boxes.
In 1918, Northern Chair Works returned to the factory and once again commenced the production of furniture. Joseph’s eldest son Maurice soon joined the company and excelled in expanding the warehouse trade, prompting a new business named JH Abrahams & Sons, with Maurice acting as managing director. By 1924, the company had prospered and the sales of furniture coverings continued to grow – so much so customers were complaining about the competition from Northern Chair Works. With this, Northern Chair Works was sold, and JH Abrahams focused its attention to merchandising in the south of England. Within two years, the London sales operations were making a substantial contribution towards the group’s profits.
By 1932 Maurice became chief executive and continued to drive the company forward. Contrary to advice from the trade, Maurice began producing moquettes – this formed a new company, Textilis Ltd. The company was such a success – designs, quality and price were just right – that Maurice, two years later, formed Unity Dye Mills Ltd, to dye his production and that of other companies nearby. In 1936 the companies were renamed Associated Weavers and a year later Maurice decided that he wanted to produce the best AO axminsters. Premises were acquired in Bradford and the most modern looms were installed.
The company went from strength to strength and the carpet divsion made substantial profits. By the mid-sixties Associated Weavers was an established brand and found itself at the forefront of carpet manufacturers.
Following a re-structuring in March 1980, the company relocated to Europe with its UK division, now based in Halifax, still retaining a solid position in the marketplace. With a strong history behind the brand, its evolution is a testament to the company’s success and following more recent investments, AW is more than equipped to meet the consumer’s demand for unique, affordable carpets.
Committed to its UK market, Associated Weavers – and in turn, its customers – benefit from a long-established team, dedicated to providing a friendly and efficient service. The structure of the team is divided into sales, marketing, credit control and customer services, headed by managing director Steve Elliott.
The Associated Weavers team plays a crucial role in the company’s operations and feels strongly about developing good relationships with its customers. The nurturing of these partnerships, is what Associated Weavers believes to gives the competitive edge over other manufacturers in the field.
With its manufacturing base located in Ronse, Belgium, Associated Weavers neatly resides in a 147,000m² facility which encompasses the head office and showroom, manufacturing plant, cut to length factory, and warehouse and distribution centre. The showroom has, this year, been refurbished and now presents both the European and UK lines with eye-catching photography, easy-to-handle point-of-sale and a bright, refreshing ambience. Elsewhere in the complex, Associated Weavers has invested heavily in its tufting machines – 34 are in operation at present, with one more shortly on its way. In addition, to maintain the quality and efficiency of its renown backings, the company has recently invested in a new backing plant, allowing the production of its ActionBac, felt and gel backings.
Existing machinery, such as rotary print lines, not only accommodates the company’s printed operations, such as patterned carpet or runners but it puts the company at an advantage should trends develop and production in this area increase.

When it comes to customer service, Associated Weavers’ strength comes in the form of a reliable team based in the UK, complemented with state-of-the-art ordering systems. Customers phoning through orders into the Halifax base can be often guaranteed to have their request processed, cut and assigned to its trailer all in the space of 12 hours.
The businesses’ core is continuing to drive product development. Steve Elliott comments: “Associated Weavers has performed better than expected given the current climate. We feel this is due to offering a unique product that takes into account the tastes of the UK market and the vital consideration of budget.” Introducing various cut lengths, yarns and designs, Associated Weavers enjoys an extensive portfolio designed for all areas of the home. Following its debut at the Harrogate Flooring Show in September, Sparkle has since received a remarkable response among homeowners. Available in black, white, pink, silver and aubergine, this deep pile carpet incorporates metalic fibre – a fibre seen nowhere else in the UK market – to create a shimmery and contemporary effect.
Alongside Sparkle, Associated Weavers introduced Carnival. The blend of variable yarns – a thicker polypropylene and thinner polyester fibre – gives this product flexibility and movement, and has proved to be a big contender in the market. Introduced at the beginning of the year, Crossland and Country Berber further strengthened the company’s position in the marketplace, combining good value with big impact. Crossland Berber’s characteristics include a blend of yarns enforcing texture, a flecked detail adding depth and a wool-like quality, whilst Country Berber provides a higher, denser, Saxony-feel carpet. Also added to the portfolio, Cashmere Berber – available in nine colours – provides a warm and unique lustre. Constructed from 100% wool – of which 15% is cashmere – this carpet is easy to clean, hard wearing and is reinforced with the company’s 10 year Wear guarantee.
Looking ahead, Associated Weavers endeavors to take innovation to the next level. First to be seen at Domotex in January, Harvest Heathers and Tuftex Twist will both be subject to a refreshed set of colourways, including on-trend pastels. However, its main highlight will be New Mood – a structure completely unique to the marketplace. Incorporating a construction of three yarn fibres, the range has been developed to bring a different element to world of carpet, in terms of both look and feel.
Amongst refreshed ranges and more new offerings due to be introduced next year, customers can also expect the arrival of the company’s brand new website. With striking photography and a whole archive of AW products, the new site will provide customers with the ultimate resource for all their flooring needs – so watch this cyberspace!
As the company moves forward into the new year, still one of the leading pioneers within the carpet industry, it becomes clear that the AW butterfly stands for more than just an icon – it captures the company’s ability to evolve, deliver colour and above all, inspire.
